When to introduce rice cereal??
Hey Ladies!
Mackenzie went to the doctors today and had a great check-up! (besides the shots) She is officially 4 months old. She is 25.5 inches long and 17 pounds!! She is in the 95 percentile for both height and weight. She's my little Chub Chub!
She loves to stand...she has been for a while now too. The doctor said that she is holding herself up like a 6 month old. But she is yet to roll over. Just goes to show how every baby is different.
Anywho. I asked my doctor when I should start giving her some of the rice cereal. He told me to hold off until 6 months. Wow. I can't lie I gave her a few tastes of the cereal (very little bit and very thinned out with my breast milk) I know that I have read that if you have a history of food allergies to wait, but both Jay and I don't...and the doctor didn't even ask this. Everyone that I talk to says that their doctor said the same and they didn't really wait. Both my mother and MIL started us around 3-4 months. So my question to you is what's your opinion?
Jay and I discussed it and I think we are going to wait until around 5 months to start her on a regular feeding schedule. We also said that it would only be in addition to her milk, never a substitute, which I think is a given. I am also going to make my own baby food. I got this baby cook maker where it steams, cooks and puree's all in one. Can't wait to start using it!
Well I hope all of you have a wonderful LONG weekend. I took Tuesday off too...so I am excited!!

We were told that a baby really doesn't need the rice cereal until 6 months of age, but if we wanted to start we could start at 4 months. Mason actually hated the taste of rice cereal. We actually started mixing it in his formula around 5 months. Even now he wont eat the rice cereal he will eat the oatmeal alone.
ReplyDeleteI started around 4 mos, I think it is when formula or breastmilk just isn't enough. If they start waking in the middle of the night, they may not be getting quite enough. I would just go with what she does, if she seems interested, go for it.
ReplyDeletei started at 4 months. isaac got one cereal bottle a day, and every 2 weeks i introduced a new cereal. after 1 month of rice cereal in a bottle, i started spoon feeding it to him.
ReplyDeleteare you talking about the babycook? LOVE it! :)
We started cereal short after he turned 5 months old. After the cereal adventure, I was making his cooked veggie & fruit cubes to freeze, so fun! Thumbs up for making plans on preparing baby food on your own, cooking for my little monkey gives me so much pleasure, it's not even funny! And hubs loves having a wide variety of homemade veggie & fruit cubes in the freezer to feed BB when I'm not home. :)
ReplyDeleteVery soon, the advanture of eating solids will begin for your little one too! Exciting times!
Some drs suggest 4 months, some say 6 months. I started D at 4 months, but next time around I am going to wait. She was exclusively breast fed, too. I think anytime after 4 months is good, just trust your instincts! And remember, wait 3-4 day in between starting new foods to be sure she isn't allergic. Our dr said once she was eating rice cereal (after a week or so) we could start her on peas, etc. Have fun! Be sure to have the video camera out =)
ReplyDeleteI started putting it in my son's bottle at 3 months, I think....thin though. Just think that our parents gave us rice cereal very early on(my brother got it as early as 1 month old) and even weaned us to cow milk by 3 months! Crazy.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't see where it would hurt to give it her now.??
I wouldn't recommend putting the cereal in a bottle, but if she can eat if off of a spoon, go for it! Four to six months is the normal range to start feeding cereal.
ReplyDeleteI made my own food too! It was fun. Did you know you can even make home made rice cereal? It has more nutritional value than the boxed stuff.
I started Chloe Jo at 4 months and her doctor was fine with that. I did have someone on facebook gripe at me about it and tell me that she was too young (I don't even know the girl that well so I defriended her). Do what you feel is best.
ReplyDeleteOur doctor said to wait for all foods till 6 months but since Annika was already eating over 32 ounces of formula (she's a chunky girl too) we started her on rice cereal at about 3 1/2 months and then oatmeal (which doesn't constipate her like rice does) around 4 months and then stage 1 foods at 5 months. Now she's on stage 2 foods. I think you should do whatever you guys feel is right for YOUR baby, not all are the same and it sounds like you have a healthy and probably hungry girl!
ReplyDeleteWe tried it at 4 months, but Quintin didn't "get it". So we waited a few more weeks and we were more successful. We started out with rice cereal for a few weeks, then oatmeal, then veggies/fruit.
ReplyDeleteI agree about not putting it in the bottle.
Good luck!
Wow!! Thank you girls for all your experiences. I think we will continue with the rice cereal for a while, then do oatmeal for a while....we will take our time and not rush it!
ReplyDeleteThanks again all your comments are a BIG help!
