Trigger Thumb

So I have noticed that Mackenzie's right thumb is always bent. When I try to extend it either I cant or it will pop. I know it sounds gross, but it really made me nervous since it's a thumb and it's on her right hand. When I touch her thumb it doesn't hurt her so I figured I would mention it to the doctor the next time I go. Well we ended up going to the doctors yesterday and I when I mentioned it I got the response....lets wait and see how she grows into it. He felt her bones in her hand and said that everything feels fine but we will check it out as she gets older. I read up on it and it says that its not that common (figures) and that 50% of kids will grow out of it. It is supposedly the tendons in her thumb are really tight - I guess that's why its always in the bent position. There are a few options...Physical Therapy, Splint or Surgery. I shutter at the thought of surgery but we will consider as a last resort. I know the doctor said that we will wait and see how she grows into it, but I cant stop thinking that the more I massage her thumb or do some kind of physical therapy earlier on the better chances she will have of it correcting by itself. The whole thing just makes me queasy.

On top of that Mackenzie is very sick, as is Jay and I, so we took her to the doctors. He said that her chest was filled with fluid, and did a blood test that showed she has some kind of bacterial infection - he said that it could mean pneumonia or bronchialitis. Both of those words scare the crap out of me! He gave me the nebulizer to use on her 3 times a day. I stayed home with her yesterday and Jay is home with her today. Luckily I work from home tomorrow too! I also have to water down her formula and make sure to offer her bottle all day long. :( Poor Mack...I feel so bad for her. But she is such a trooper...she is still playing and laughing - so at least she isn't miserable! She even sits really well with me when I do the nebulizer thingy...I love her!!

Figures that we are going away on vacation next week...I can't wait. Every year we go down to Wildwood, NJ for some fun, sun and good eats! Hopefully the family will be all better then!

  3. I'm sure I'd be worried about the thumb too, and I agree, massaging it can't hurt! Sounds like there are some good options for treatment in the future too, in case she doesn't grow out of it. So there's a good chance it won't be a long term problem!

That sucks you are all sick! I hope everyone feels better soon. And have a great trip!!

  4. Poor girly!! I hope the nebs help and she starts clearing up soon. Good to hear that it hasn't gotten her spirit down!

About the thumb... I hate the wait and see response because I like to have a plan NOW so I don't blame you for feeling anxious about it. Massage away girl!
